FLOODLIGHTS – THINGS YOU DO
Musings from the Director and the Band

“I’m so drawn to exploring seemingly small, but pivotal moments in someones life. Growing up is confusing, not just when you’re a kid, but your whole life I feel. We’re always evolving, different things matter to us, we’re always a work in progress. I wanted to capture this sense in this film. You know, we can be carefree, but we all have things going on beneath the surface. I wanted to explore what love and friendship is. It’s all disorientating when we’re in it, and so I want this to be expressed in how we put this together.”

“Straight up, Floodlights are one of my favourite bands. As someone who works with visuals, their music always conjures up strong imagery in my mind when I listen.

They’re incredibly visceral storytellers, and in my mind make music with so much emotion. It’s strangely relatable, it’s uplifting, and at the same time speaks to growing as a person. It makes me want to get up and do something.”

Floodlights

“As a band, we have all spent a lot of time on the Peninsula and feel a really strong connection to the place & with Jarred also living down there, we felt confident that he would be able capture the unique beauty of the place we all love.

It was also a great experience passing the song on to Jarred and allowing him to create his own narrative, it was special to see a whole new perspective and story born from the song. We now have a different experience playing the song, with the clip’s beautiful imagery in mind.”

“I felt like only Max, who I’ve known for nearly a decade, could shoot this. What he creates in camera is often so close to how I see things in my head. It means I can fully trust and let go of being too particular on the day, and focus energy into story and performance. It brings so much satisfaction once in the edit to not be wishing we did things differently.”
