Take me back
Quest + Sony Foundation – ‘You Can Stay’

“I knew that I wanted to represent both Miles and Mollie as people. Not as archetypes, or patients, but as whoever they actually are. So the thought of gathering their own photos and videos arrived pretty quick. I also knew that if we shot an interview I didn’t want it to feel stilted, rehearsed or detached, and so handheld was an idea I was excited by. In a sense this made things tricky for Michael but there’s something really honest about seeing a handheld camera pan to a subject. Other elements of the look were worked out collaboratively with Michael (DOP). He was a big, big help and had thoughts on angles, gear, lighting and lenses – all things that are super fun to talk about.”

“I’ll do pretty much whatever it takes to be on the level of the people I’m interviewing. Sometimes this means acting as a leader: clear & confident, at other times it means displaying my own vulnerability. I never want to have a list of questions in front of me and I always try to read the room. And if there’s ever an elephant in that room, I recognize that it’s my responsibility to point it out, give it a name, ask it how it’s doing.”

MICHAEL LINCOLN (DOP)
“It’s not often you get to align your values with commercial work, so it was an absolute pleasure getting to lens this project! The priority was giving space to Mollie & Miles’ stories.
Director Thomas Hyland had the fantastic idea of shooting the interviews handheld on long lenses to heighten the sense of immediacy & authenticity. Wildebeest brought together a gorgeous crew
that all brought sensitivity and nuance to such an important subject.
