DEFENCE JOBS AUSTRALIA
CINEMATOGRAPHER | LEVIN MUNDINGER

“We all know that tropical Queensland can get very hot and humid, but it gets even warmer when you have to film a Battle PT together with the Army. I remember running with the troops around the oval and joining in on their training session, trying to stay close to the action. I can say, it was the most physical and intense filming I have ever done. When Director Jarred Osborn and I first spoke about this project we both knew that we had to achieve high quality footage with as little gear as possible. The shoot days would be fast paced with limited room for interruptions, so we needed to come up with a plan that allowed us to be mobile without sacrificing the quality of our shots.”

“We traveled to Brisbane with the Ursa Mini and the Pocket 6k. The decision to go with Blackmagic was based on the fact that the pictures match well, which was an important factor for our two camera interview setup and because they are also quite lightweight and easy to travel with. You can’t take every piece of your equipment, so you need a system that works, wherever you go.”

“When shooting up to 15 videos you don’t have much time to play around with the lighting or camera angles on set. The challenge was to be versatile without limiting creativity. Each setup we tried to change things up a bit without losing the overall look. We always put focus on incorporating movement to our scenes and have a personal feeling by staying close to the action. Even for our interviews we always used a very soft/cinematic lighting set up to match our overall look. This combined with our fast paced B-Roll really helps to keep the viewer engaged.”

“For me, the two weeks filming on base were filled with; running behind troops through knee high grass, capturing a military dog practice attacks, driving in big combat trucks and having blank bullets flying at my lenses.”
