Soul of Chapel

As Chapel Street slowly emerges from forced dormancy, we’re there waiting to hear the stories of the people and businesses which make this slice of Melbourne so damn special.

12 new films, 12 old perspectives which explore the real and what feels like imagined history of Chapel Street. United by tradition, experience, and a drive for group prosperity, each narrative gives special insight into this wonderful collection of shops and shop owners, acknowledging how their experienced has been shaped, and indeed shaped this three mile stretch of misfits, memory, and fever dreamed strangeness beyond reckoning.

Cue nostalgia.

Stewards of tradition

We once again found ourselves looking deep into people’s lives. Into businesses that were built over decades; blending themselves into a community that’s shown us a solid half century’s worth of good times, and acute misfortune.

But the sentiment of ‘once was’ surprisingly doesn’t exist in the local vocabulary. Despite ongoing challenges, you can sense a spirited attempt to shepherd Chapel Street from one era into the next.
