Julian went on a holiday to Japan – his camera, as ever, was by his side the whole time. He discovered a peculiar sense of solitude in a country buzzing with lights, trains, crowds and experiences – from the theatrical to the serene to the utterly bizarre. Underneath the noise and the chaos, Julian captured people alone, wandering the streets, buried in phones. He wanted to articulate the quiet and peaceful nothingness below the surface of one of the world’s busiest places. Bloom was an attempt to capture the contrast between human beings and the cities they inhabit.

We didn’t want the footage to have to conform to any kind of narrative – it was important that the film was given space to speak for itself. But in this loose process, which is anything but accidental, a hypnotic repetition surfaced and began to tell us something quite profound about Japanese culture. And Matt Hadley’s score played an integral part. At times intense and jarring, its beautiful synths and string lines are edited to interplay with the audio captured in camera. We’re also really proud that Bloom has been named as a ‘Vimeo Staff Pick’, which we think goes to show that a simpler approach to filmmaking is something that really resonates with audiences.
